Norwegian Rock Climbing

Experience the thrill of climbing perfect granite under the magical midnight sun! 

This course offers an adventure through the legendary Lofoten Peninsula and Islands, located in the Arctic Circle, northern Norway. Spend the week scaling pristine granite cliffs above the turquoise sea, surrounded by a breathtaking and untamed landscape that has inspired climbers and mountaineers for generations. Enjoy fully catered accommodations in a charming Norwegian chalet. From the moment you arrive in Narvik, every detail is taken care of, ensuring you can fully immerse yourself in an unforgettable rock climbing journey in one of the world's most stunning locations.

  • Day 1: Travel from Narvik

     

    Morning/ Afternoon: At 9am a car will be waiting to drive you along the stunning coastline to your chalet in Lofoten.

    Evening: Settle into your cozy chalet, with time to unpack and unwind. Enjoy a welcome evening meal and meet the other participants on the rock climbing course. Your host and instruction team will give a brief orientation about the week's rock climbing activities and what to expect.

     

    Day 2: Introduction to Lofoten Rock Climbing

     

    Morning: Enjoy a hearty breakfast with fjord views. Meet your expert climbing instructor for a briefing on safety protocols and the week's climbing plan.

    Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Head out to your first climbing location. Start with a mix of single-pitch climbs to assess skill levels and acclimate to the rock.

    Afternoon: Break for a packed lunch in a scenic spot. Continue rock climbing in the afternoon, focusing on improving rope work skills.

    Evening: Return to the chalet for a relaxing evening and a delicious dinner. Reflect on the day's climbs with your group and instructor.

     

    Day 3: Multi-Pitch Rock Climbing Adventure

     

    Morning: After breakfast, embark on a more challenging multi-pitch rock climb. Enjoy the stunning views as you ascend higher.

    Midday: Picnic lunch on a mountain ledge with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and fjords.

    Afternoon: Complete the climb and abseil down, practicing efficient ropework techniques and movement on rock.

    Evening: Return to the chalet for dinner. Share stories from the day's rock climbing adventure around a warm fire or enjoy some free time.

     

    Day 4: Exploring Hidden Rock Climbing Gems

     

    Morning: Early breakfast followed by a drive to a more remote rock climbing area known for its unique routes and beautiful scenery.

    Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Engage in a mix of single-pitch and multi-pitch climbs tailored to challenge your skills and push your limits.

    Afternoon: Lunch break in a picturesque location. Spend the afternoon exploring more routes or taking a scenic scramble to a viewpoint.

    Evening: Head back to the chalet for a relaxing evening, enjoying a hearty dinner.

     

    Day 5: Light Activity Day

     

    Morning: You will have a range of options to choose from with your guide who will tailor the options to suit your needs. You can explore different rock climbing areas, focus on ropework, or improve movement techniques.

    Afternoon: Enjoy a packed lunch during your activities.

    Evening: Return to the chalet for a special dinner. Relax and prepare for the next day’s adventures.

     

    Day 6: Final Rock Climbing Challenges

     

    Morning: Early start with breakfast, then head out for your final day of rock climbing. Tackle some of the most iconic and challenging climbing routes in Lofoten.

    Midday: Lunch at the base of a stunning peak. Discuss and apply advanced rock climbing techniques with your instructor.

    Afternoon: Complete your climbs, focusing on efficiency and improving your overall rock climbing skills.

    Evening: Return to the chalet for a celebratory farewell dinner. Share highlights of the week and enjoy the camaraderie of your group.

     

    Day 7: Departure

     

    Morning: Have your last breakfast by the fjords, savoring the tranquil surroundings. Pack up and prepare for departure.

    Late Morning: Drive back to Narvik airport, reminiscing about your incredible week of rock climbing in Lofoten.

    Afternoon: Catch your flight home with unforgettable memories, stunning photos, and well-earned sore muscles from your Arctic Circle adventure.

  • To fully enjoy and benefit from this rock climbing adventure, it's essential that you have recent experience with traditional (trad) climbing techniques and are comfortable with abseiling. While we’ll tailor the climbing grades to match your ability, this trip is not intended for beginners or as an introduction to rock climbing.

    For those interested in joining but new to climbing, I highly recommend participating in my Rock Voyager course beforehand, which will prepare you perfectly for the challenges of the Norway course.

  • ROCK CLIMBING SHOES

    If you have your own then please bring them. If you are going to buy rock shoes then make sure that they are well fitted and comfortable for all day wear. It is often best to go into a specialist shop to try them on as all brands have a slightly different sizing.

     

    HELMET

    Lightweight climbing helmet

    Recommended: Petzl Sirocco or Petzl Meteor

     

    CLIMBING HARNESS

    Full sit harness with leg loops and gear loops

    Recommended: Petzl Aquila

     

    HARDWARE

    You can get this hardware online or in store, make sure that you buy it from a reputable supplier. Good brand names are either Petzl or DMM

    • 1 x long sewn Sling (11mm width) (1.2m length/2.4 metre circumference)

    • 2 screwgate Karabiners

    • 1 non-s/gate Karabiner

    • 3m length of 5mm cord to make prusik loops

    • Belay/abseil plate

     

    RUCKSACK X 2 (ONE SMALL ONE LARGE)

    45-55 litre capacity. Lightweight and comfortable.

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Tupilak 50+

    plus waterproof /dry-bag liner or nylon rain-cover, sadly Scotland is famous for the odd wet and rainy day!

     

    BOOTS

    Just like the rock shoes you need to make sure that your boots are nice and comfortable to wear all day. You will be best to go into the store and try them on. 

    Recommended:

    3 season/B1-rated Boots with semi-stiffened soles and ankle support (Scarpa Marmolada; La Sportiva Boulder Mid X)

    (Boots must be walked in/worn in until comfortable - brand new boots will give you blisters and can ruin your fun!)

     

    APPROACH SHOES

    Climbers’ Approach shoes with stiffened edges which are excellent for scrambling in good weather but don’t offer ankle support and can get wet/cold quickly

    Recommended: La Sportiva TX, Scarpa Zodiac

    Please bring both Boots and Approach Shoes if you can

     

    SHELL GARMENTS

    Lightweight wind and waterproof Jacket

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Garwhal.

    Waterproof Overtrousers

    Recommended Mountain Equipment Makalu

     

    INNER CLOTHING

    Lightweight Fleece or Softshell Jacket

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Diablo

    Mid-layer Fleece shirt

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Eclipse Zip T, Mountain Equipment Shroud

    Long-sleeved thermal Vest and Leggings

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Equinox

    Lightweight Stretch Trousers

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment Ibex pants or any Leggings or Tracksuit Bottoms

    2 pairs of good quality walking socks

    Shorts

      

    GLOVES

    Warm waterproof gloves

    Recommended: Mountain Equipment SuperAlpine Glove and Mountain Mitt

    Durable grip gloves for climbing/abseiling (tight-fitting, leather-palmed gloves or plastic-coated hardware gloves are effective for scrambling and are cheap in hardware stores)

    Crack climbing gloves to make hand jams easier, there are lots of cracks in Lofoten!

    WOOL HAT/BALACLAVA

    It can get cold even in Spring & Summer, it is best to prepare for all weather conditions in Norway!

     

    HEADTORCH LED

    It is important to prepare for every eventuality. Despite the 24hr daylight, In some cases, we may be descending in dusky light and therefore it is important to have the right torch to allow you to navigate off the mountain. I now take two head torches, both fully charged, as this means if one runs out or malfunctions, you are not fiddling around with batteries and cold hands in the dark.

    Recommended: Petzl Tikka , Petzl Swift RL  

     

    DRINK FLASKS

    Thermos flask for hot drinks and 1 litre water bottle

     

    SUNGLASSES AND SUNSCREEN

    We are optimistic for sunshine and blue skies!

     

    SLEEPING MASK AND EAR PLUGS

    With 24hr daylight and a new environment for you, it is advisable to take these to aid sleep.

     

    SKI/TREKKING POLES  (not essential)

    Telescopic, not essential but very useful on descents and rough ground conditions.

     

    FIRST AID

    Personal first aid kit with painkillers patches for blisters and minor cuts, a full kit is carried by your Guide
